Teacher Notes (not visible to students)

This activity helps first graders build addition fluency to 10 using visuals, matching, sorting and simple problems. Use counters, cubes, or drawn dots during lessons. Teachers can model number bonds and counting-on strategies. Students should be encouraged to explain their thinking aloud as they solve problems. In this objective, students are required to show addition fluency with numbers up to 10. Effective mathematics teaching focuses on the development of both conceptual understanding and procedural fluency. When students are mathematically fluent they will be able to choose flexibly among methods and strategies to solve problems. Fluency builds from initial exploration and discussion of numbers and number concepts to developing computational fluency that extends beyond just the memorization of addition facts. Through hands-on exploration, students will discover the relationship between numbers in addition number families.
