This activity introduces second graders to the history and everyday life around coal mining in South Wales. It includes a short informational summary, vocabulary practice, matching and sorting tasks, an auto-graded drag-and-drop question, and two open-ended multimedia tasks for students to show understanding. Use pictures or a short video about mining history if you want to add background, but the activity can be done with just the text and discussion. For the partner task, students need paper and pencils. If you let students record, ensure devices are available or have a drawing alternative ready. High-quality open-ended responses will show clear connections to the topic. For the Show It task, a high-quality photo, drawing, or recording will name or show one or more mining tools, explain a simple reason why miners worked there (e.g., to heat homes), or show a scene of a mining community. For the Pair and Share recording, a high-quality response will include both partners speaking or showing their part, with one partner explaining and the other listening or adding a fact. Teachers can mark these as correct when students include at least one accurate fact and a clear attempt to communicate it.
