This activity connects oral language development with GenAI prompt engineering, allowing students to practice their creative writing prompts before developing their own story. It can be completed over the course of several days, completing one section or page at a time. It can be done as a whole class for younger students to work together to create a story or by individuals in upper elementary grades with more reading and writing experience. Introduce Descriptive Word Banks- Begin by guiding students through the provided word banks to choose descriptive words for a character (e.g., brave, silly, magical) and a setting (e.g., forest, space, beach). Build the Prompt Together- Have students complete the structured sentence prompt to describe their character and setting. Encourage them to use strong, descriptive language to bring their ideas to life. Create the Illustration- Use Seesaw creative tools to draw your character, setting, or add another page to create a combined illustration. Add the Story Text- On the final page, record, type, or handwrite their story using their character and setting as the starting point. The story can be simple (1-3 sentences for PK–K, or longer for 1st–2nd grade and up), focusing on using descriptive words and completing a short narrative. Publish or Share- Once complete, students can share their story with classmates or families. Optional: print the activity to display in the class library of student-authored tales!
